The Biomedical Engineering Department of Tianjin Medical University was set up in 1986, which turned our university into one of the 17 universities which runs this program nationwide. School of Biomedical Engineering was founded in 2010. The school became a Master’s degree authorizing unit in 1996 and became a first level Ph.D authorizing unit for biomedical engineering in 2003. It became a Tianjin key discipline and a high quality specialty of Tianjin municipality in 2001. Since 2006 it’s been the member unit of the biomedical engineering education steering committee of the Ministry of Education, and it takes an influential and advantageous role in biomedical engineering field nationwide. Biomedical engineering is an across-discipline of biomedicine, science and engineering. This school has become a biomedical engineering teaching-research base which incorporates science, engineering and medicine, supported by the medical advantage of Tianjin Medical University.
School of Biomedical Engineering brings in talents and cultivates valuable professionals and focuses on the development of its teaching team to optimize its structure. In 2010 it was named the teaching team of Tianjin. Currently this school has reached an advanced level domestically for professional titles, ages, qualifications and education-related structure of its team or team members. Right now, this school has 26 full-time teachers, among whom there are 4 professors, 12 associate professors, 1 national excellent teacher, 1 national advanced teacher of teaching ethics, and 1 distinguished teacher of Tianjin. The average age of teachers is under 40, and 62% hold doctorate degrees.
School of Biomedical Engineering centers on cultivating students’ ability, paying close attention to fostering innovative and applied talents. In 2009 it obtained 2 national quality projects including Characterized Biomedical Engineering Personnel Cultivation Innovative Experimental Area and National Top-Quality Course：Biological Modeling Simulation; it has also won 1 second prize of Tianjin teaching success award. Its students have received 3 awards for the Chinese University Students Science and Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and 15 awards for such competition held in Tianjin.
School of Biomedical Engineering promotes its core competitiveness in respect of discipline construction and scientific research, relying on the advantage of the first level PhD disciplines. It incorporates 3 research directions with medical characteristics: medical neuroengineering, medical nanometer engineering and medical image engineering. Currently, the school offers 2 majors for undergraduates: biomedical engineering plus biotechnology and biological information technology.
Since the “11th Five Year Plan”, the school has made great progress in scientific research; it hosted 34 research projects of the provincial and ministerial level or above, among which there are 12 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 projects of The Foundation for the Doctoral Program of Ministry of Education; it received 2 second prizes for Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award. 208 academic papers have been published, among which 68 papers have been included in SCI/EI; 12 patents have been applied for; 21 PhD and 128 Master’s students have been cultivated.
