Academic Departments

The department of Operative Surgery of Tianjin Medical University was set up in 1954. In the beginning, it was named as Topographic Anatomy and Operation department, in the 1980's, it was renamed as the department of Operative Surgery. The curriculum is designed for the students of Clinical medicine, oral medicine, imagine medicine and the students of international clinical medicine. The member of teachingstaffs is abundant and has excellent academic performance. One teacher has the doctor degree and the other four are not lower than postgraduate degree. The rate of postgraduate degree is more than 70%for the teachers in our dept. Furthermore, most of them are skillful and experienced in clinical aspect.

Academic Leader:Ma Yuemei, Ph.D., professor, Master Supervisor, the director of Dept. of operative surgery. She has engaged in teaching and scientific researching work of operative surgery for more than 30 years. At the same time, she has reached huge achievement in educated management among a number of institutions. Her enthusiasm and experience in teaching leads to an excellent teaching quality which has been memorized and praised by not only students but also other colleagues. As for the research achievement, She has edited a number of medical textbooks, such as The Basics ofOperative Surgery (the 2nd ),  The Basic Practice of Clinical technology (edition in 2007, People Health publishing House),  The Experiment of Operative Surgery (Edition in 2007, People Health publishing House) and  Regional anatomy (Edition in 2013, China higher education press), which has become valuable reference in academic fields.She has also published many books in aspectof teaching reform and teaching management. Additionally, a number of key scientific research projects has been presided by her and more than ten research articles had been published as well.

Course Description

Operative Surgery is considered as the most typical and fundamental course which has been set up as an important core course in the beginning. As a bridge between the basic medicine and clinical medicine, it has become as an indispensable course used to turn the medical students into clinical surgeons. After more than 60 years practical teaching and evaluation, an excellent teaching syllabus and training plan have been established. Based on the high level criteria and requirement in the syllabus, research and teachingreform has been constantly operated.Correct aseptic concepts, good team-spirit and love of life have been gradually set up among students through the combination of theoretical and practical teaching. Training of fundamental technique and operative simulation are utilized to build up clinical capacities, such as aseptic technique, operational ability and surgical skills, whichcould lay a solid foundation for the students to become qualified doctors.

Apart from Operative Surgery, many other courses, such as Early Exposure to Clinical Practice Training, Clinical Application Technology and New Progress (public elective course), Surgery around Us (freshman seminar ), are covered in curriculum in order to enable students to understand clinical medicine through flexible and diverse discussions and practices, master basic clinical thinking, establish the concept of saving lives and serving patients wholeheartedly.

Practical Course Teaching Condition

There are four operative theatres in Dept operative surgery, one theatre has four real operative tables and lights, and other facilities for operation. The laboratories are highly compatible with real clinical operative theatre, showing simulated clinical experimental environments for practical teaching. These make students feel immersive, stimulated the clinical role transformation from students to doctors.

As a project which is supported by central government worked with local government to build special laboratory, we deploy new simulated model of operation in order to train basic operative skill. The monitor and demonstration system can observe all operations done by students. This system can review and correct their mistakes during operation. It benefits to form correct operative habit. So the interaction between teachers and students has been strengthened and the experimental teaching effect has been greatly improved.

10 machines of laparoscopic surgery trainers are located in the lab to help students learn the principle of minimally invasive surgery. Those machines can also train the basic technique of laparoscopic surgery, such as tissue clamping and moving, ligature of vessel and suture. This type of training encourages interesting of new progress of modern surgery. By multi-function model training and laparoscopic training, the students could gain new progress and development tendency of surgery.

In order to encourage self-learning, we have built website of operative surgery teaching to improve the understanding of teaching progress and teaching contents.

The feedback of students is an important part of the whole evaluation. This can help us to improve our teaching quality. Most students are interested in Operative Surgery. Furthermore, their teachersare highly remarked by them. Therefore,in the system of student evaluation, two teachers won the first place in the theoretical and experimental teaching of the university and the basic medicine science school.
