The Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital launched a new round of primary and secondary school eye health screening activities in Dagang Oilfield with Tianjin Coastal people’s Hospital.

At the end of spring and the begining of summer, The Ophthalmic Hospital of Tianjin Medical University,in conjunction with Tianjin Coastal peoples Hospital, launched a new round of eye health screening activities for primary ang secondary schools in Dagang Oilfield, in order to assist the prevention and control of myopia among teenagers in response to the call of national policies.

The screening was mainly targeted at primary and secondary schools in Dagang Oilfield area of Tianjin, including Dagang Seaside School in Coastal New-region of Tianjin, Dagang Tongsheng School in Coastal New-region of Tianjin, The first middle school of Dagang Oilfield in Coastal New-region of Tianjin, and Dagang Xiyuan School in Coastal New-region of Tianjin, a total of 19 schools, with more than 12,400 students screened.

Our screening started at 8 oclock in the morning of May 5 in Dagang Gangshi School in Coastal New-region of Tianjin, and was scheduled to end in the afternoon of May 24 at Tuanbowa  School in Coastal New-region of Tianjin, which lasted for 20 days.

Visual examination is the main and basic content of this screening activity, in addition, students can voluntarily choose to have other special eye examinations, including mydriasis. It is worth to mention that in the event, the professional team who walked into the campus brought in the prefessional inspection, the popularization of eye health knowledge and the deepening and strengthening of the consciousness of prevention and control of myopia, which let more children recognize and understand the importance of vision protection, or their own existing vision problems, helping early prevention, early detection and early control of myopia.

The staff team of this screening consists of 23 graduate students and undergraduated interns. Therefore, it is a precious learning opportunity and a unique social practice for these young staffs. In addition to the training and improvement of professional and communicational skills, screening also opens a window for optometry learners to understand the current social situation, make us think about the direction of the next step.

The large number of data that the screening collected and produced for the government, schools and society is a valuable information, which will help deepen our understanding of the eye health of primary and secondary school students in China, and play a certain degree of prompt role in the overall arrangement of the prevention and control of myopia in China's youth.
