School of Medical Laboratory

Medical Laboratory is an applied science. From simple to complex tests, in hospitals and clinics, at the bedside or at specialized reference facilities, Medical Laboratory is a major hub in the healthcare system, with the majority of treatment decisions based on lab test results. Beyond routine patient care, Medical Laboratory is a leader in medical research, innovating new devices and measurement methods, identifying and conducting further analysis on new biomarkers of health and disease, and ensuring that testing performed in clinical trials meets the highest standards.

The Medical Laboratory of Tianjin Medical University was formerly the Department of Laboratory Science of Tianjin Second Medical College. It was founded in 1984 and is one of the first six undergraduate Medical Laboratory established in China.

During the past 30 years, we gradually established a relatively independent system integrating teaching, scientific research and management. In 1996, the Medical Laboratory major became the specialty construction major of Tianjin Medical University. After the development of the “10th Five-Year Plan” and “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, our major obtained the right to confer a master degree and doctoral degree at 1998 and 2006, respectively. And the major became “Tianjin Brand Professional major” and “National Specialty Construction Point”. After that, the Medical Laboratory has taken a new step in discipline construction, personnel training, faculty, scientific research, academic exchanges and cooperation. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the Medical Laboratory major received a special fund of 4.8 million yuan from the central government to support the development of local colleges and universities, and completed the construction of the Medical Laboratory technology experimental teaching platform and the Molecular Diagnostic Comprehensive Skills Training Center. In 2016, it received the 13th Five-Year Characteristic Discipline Support Program of Tianjin medical university and became Tianjin Key Discipline. In 2017, it was approved as Tianjin Ordinary Higher Education Advantage and Professional Application and Construction Professional Construction Project and Tianjin University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.

Currently, there are 4 professional teaching and research sections, including 11 professors and 9 associate professors and 14 lecturers, among them 5 are doctoral supervisors and 14 are master supervisors. Moreover, there are testing centers (for clinical training), experimental centers, molecular diagnostics laboratories, and Tianjin Medical Technology Testing Institute.

Our major has 56 graduated students and 350 undergraduate students. There are different students’ activities, including art festival, English contest, sports festival, science and technology contest and community services, which enrich campus culture life. These activities supported the implement of “Quality Education”, and became a very important “second classes”. Based on the “quality and innovation” education, we focused on the awareness of quality, innovation and service in teaching. Our major received a high score in 2002 and 2008 undergraduate teaching evaluations of the Ministry of Education. Recently, reform of graduate education was implemented, we not only pay attention to the academic research of graduate students, but also cultivate the academic application”, which keep our graduate in the top level.

We have a high level research platform and improved our educational team via recruiting the teachers with strong competition. Our major has built an innovative discipline team. At present, there are 48 research projects, including 12 National Natural Science Foundations and 16 provincial and ministerial-level projects, with a research funding of 8.772 million yuan. 12 horizontal projects, with a funding of 3.388 million yuan. Twelve people hosted the National Natural Science Foundation of China, eight hosted the Tianjin Science and Technology Project, five hosted the Ministry of Education project, and three hosted the Ministry of Science and Technology project. We have published 239 research papers (including 62 articles (up to IF38.597) and 4 articles in EI) and 38 academic publications. Two researches respectively won the second prize and the third prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award. In addition, as applied science, we applied 16 invention patents and utility model patents and obtained 4 invention patents. We also promote the exchanges and cooperation with universities and research institutions at home and abroad, and now have established cooperation with University of Michigan, the University of Sydney (Australia), and the Baylor College of Medicine.

Years of accumulation have formed an excellent educational environment in Medical Laboratory. The three-in-one education mode which consists of classroom teaching, campus culture and social practice has cultivated the students with high comprehensive quality adapted to clinical needs, which has been highly appraised by employers. In the past three years, the employment rate of undergraduates has reached more than 95%, and the rate of graduate entrance examinations is around 30%.
