The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, was established in 2012 at Tianjin Medical University. Dr. Xilin Yang is the current chair of the department. Its predecessors were the Department of Epidemiology and the Department of Biostatistics, which were founded in 1957 and 1978, respectively. Under the leadership of famous epidemiologists such as Profs. Guanyi Geng, Zhenglun Wang, and Jianhua Wang, and biostatisticians such as Profs. Ruotao Wang and Wei Wang, it has developed into the key discipline in the third phase of the “211 Project” and the key discipline of Tianjin, as well as PhD degree authorization department and postdoctoral training stations. Our department offers many excellent courses to students. Epidemiology is a national quality course; Epidemiology and Health is a quality video open course, proposed by the Ministry of Education; and Health Statistics is the municipal quality course in Tianjin.

  

At present, 18 faculty members are employed by our department, including 6 professors, 7 associate professors, 4 PhD supervisors, and 8 MSc supervisors. Up to now, 21 PhD students and more than 100 MSc students have graduated from our department.

  

Our professors served as the editor-in-chief of the General Higher Education National Planning textbooks, for example, Epidemiology 1st-8th editions, and Preventive Medicine 1st-2nd editions. During the past 5 years, we served as chief or associate editors have edited more than 32 textbooks and monographs. We have carried out 21 projects of Educational Reform, and published 14 teaching-related papers. We have won several National, Municipal or University-level Teaching Achievement Awards. We have received over 9 grants funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 provincial/municipal-level grants, and 10 university-level grants, with a total funding of more than 5 million RMB. In particular, Prof. Xilin Yang has received the national grants funded by the National Key Research and Development Program of China in 2018, titled Current profile of risk factor prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus and its risk prediction model and intervention and management technique development., with a funding of RMB 2,150,000. We have published over 200 research papers, including 117 SCI papers, 24 papers (10 collaborative papers) with impact factors of 5 to 10, 6 papers (4 collaborative papers) with impact factors of 10 and above, and the highest impact factor of the publications was 19.337. We have won the Tianjin Scientific and Technology Progress Award, and 7 other awards. With the efforts of our faculty members, we have successfully held the 2016 National Biostatistics Conference and the 2017 Stroke Prevention and Control Conference in Tianjin.
